My son recently celebrated his 5th birthday by having a pirate party. Our guests dressed up in costumes. Have you thought about asking the guests to dress up for your theme? This will be a great ice breaker and make fun conversation, not to mention great pictures. Also, it is entertainment in itself. What I mean is that when the guests--children--see each other all dressed up, they will automatically want to act out a scene for their character. My son spent hours pretending to be a captain of a ship.
