As a host, you know how to conduct yourself and to carry yourself. But what do you need to do as a party guest? How do you learn to behave yourself and when it is appropriate to do certain things? Here are a few guidelines that you may want to follow to make the party a hit for everyone.

Perfect Party Etiquette

Of course your host must be on their best behavior. They are the ones throwing the party so they already know what to expect out of themselves. But how do the guests act? What is the correct way to behave? Here are some tips to show your host or hostess that you appreciate all of the good work and you care for their hard work.

You have just received an invitation to a great party. And you are so excited. What do you do now? First of all, it is a good idea to RSVP. You want to let the host know if you have other plans or if you will be able to make the party. Most people like to know how many guests to expect for a party. You don’t want your friends and family to spend more money than they needed to.

When you are talking with the party-thrower, ask if you can help. They may need it but feel ashamed to ask. Or they may not realize that you are available to help them out. It may even be simply bringing something to drink or a dessert. Do not bring any dishes unless your party host has given you the go-ahead. They may be making the same exact dish as you. And if you bring wine, the guests may not drink alcohol. Always run ideas by the host first.

Ask if you can help in any of the setting up or planning of the party. If you are helping, you need to show up earlier than others. This will give lots of adequate preparation time. Never be late. You are being counted on. Maybe you could bring some decorations. Maybe you have a table cloth or leftover items that will go with the theme of the party. You might even create a centerpiece.

Even if you are not helping with the party, you can help by showing up on time. Always be prompt. This shows that you are interested and support all of the work that was put into the occasion. Other guests should not have to wait on you so that they can start portions of the event. No one wants to eat cold dinner.

Help to clear the table when different courses are done. And you may also want to help to clear the table when dinner is done altogether. If the host/hostess tells you "no thank you", just sit down and continue to mingle or continue a conversation that was started. Do not take a guests plate if they are still eating. That is very rude and you may get some dirty looks. Washing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen is usually held off until all of the guests have gone home. But some hosts appreciate the help while you are there. Offer to help clean up the mess that was made.

Be kind. Always chat with the other guests. This will help in those awkward moments of silence that can often happen. Show people that you are friendly and this helps to make the party a big hit. You may get other offers from guests to attend parties in the future. And don’t talk about things that are not appropriate. Don’t talk like a drunken sailor and don’t speak on subjects that are controversial. This is not your home or party and you don’t want to be rude in another’s home.

Please, as for any party or occasion, remember to drink responsibly. You don’t want people to talk about you at work in the morning. Don’t be sloppy and you definitely want to be safe on the way home. If you feel like your drinks are getting the best of you, then that is a sign that you need to stop.

Have fun and be on your best behavior. You want more invites to other parties don’t you? Of course you do. Then be sure to be a great guest and you will get compliments from the hosts.
