The holidays are a time for loved ones to be with each other. Holidays always seem to bring the best out of everyone. And the kindest of hearts come together to help out the less fortunate and to care for people who are in need. Charity is the most perfect form of helping those in need. But charity doesn’t necessarily mean to actually give someone and item, merchandise, or cash. Charity means to give of yourself as well. You give your time and volunteer to help in some way. And there are lots of ways to be charitable. Here are a few ideas that may put you in the holiday and giving spirit.
The most popular or well-known place to volunteer at is probably a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter. A soup kitchen is where several foods are given out for the person(s) who are in need of a good, hot meal. Generally, your job as a kitchen volunteer will be to hand to food out or to put different foods on trays for everyone. To help with a homeless shelter, you may give out food, or be giving out warm blankets for everyone. Another idea would be to simply go out to a shelter and read a holiday book to all of the children who are there.

Many church groups or religious affiliations host lots of charitable activities. Some churches choose several under-privileged families and provide lots of gifts or meals for them. And many religious organizations create “shoe-boxes” or gift boxes full of miscellaneous items to give to local and even families who are abroad and from other countries. The idea of these gift boxes are to get supplies such as toothbrushes, soap, and other toiletries put together. For families with children, you may want to give them small toys such as dolls and cars. Books are always well liked for little ones. Girls may like pretty hairbows and toy Jewelry. Boys would probably love to have action figures or maybe some fishing gear. Be sure that all items are safe for others to use.

If you are not associated with any type of religion or are not involved with your church’s charity groups, there are still ways to give to others. Usually, local stores and retailers host ways to donate to everyone. Many of these retailers often do charitable donations for children. While you are in a store, it is as easy as picking up an item, purchasing it, and placing it in the donation bins or boxes. And that is a great way to know your gifts are going to a honorable and trustworthy company.
When giving out actual presents and gifts, always be aware or how legitimate a company or corporation is. You don’t want to be donating toys, clothing, or money to someone who is just going to use it for themselves when they are capable of taking care of themselves. If you have never given to a company, consider doing some background searches to find out if this company is the real thing. Always keep receipts and vouchers to prove that you have given a donation to someone.
It is always such a good feeling to be able to give something to someone. And when you see how happy your gift, your time, and your kindness has made a person, then your efforts will be well worth it. And the chain of charity and thoughtfulness will hopefully keep going and reach more and more people with each passing year. It feels so good to make someone’s holiday season as special as it can be.
